"Regenstein Center for African Apes"
Visitor observation stations were created with eye catching
interpretive graphics. Proto also fabricated aluminum welded
kiosks to house the changeable animal identification system
to accommodate their changing habitats, including interpretive
interior and exterior graphics. Other graphics were built
into our movable seating areas.
This Lyons-Zaremba designed
exhibit provides the apes with richly textured and naturalistic
enclosures, where the researchers are able to observe the
animal behaviors and the visitors have a clear, fun way to
learn more about African apes, their ecosystems, and a typical
day in their life. The interactive exhibits focus on
operant conditioning, communication, feeding and learning,
such as the 25 foot high columnar wall which was fabricated
with LED back-lit interactives for the food groups. Three-dimensional
bronze bust castings of all five types of African apes were
built to scale. Bronze handprints, also to scale, are positioned
for comparisons and once the handprints are touched the
visitor hears the corresponding apes' sounds. From the
simple 6-sided rotating handrail to more complex touch
screen to an audiovisual theater, visitor responses are
elicited.
